TCS Insulation & Coatings Explains Spray Foam Insulation

Batt insulation , also known as polyurethane foam, is a green building material that insulates better than fiberglass batts or cellulose leading to major heating and cooling cost savings for homeowners. It creates a custom air seal that blocks unwanted infiltration of heat or moisture, reducing condensation which is the leading cause for mold and mildew within a home’s structure.

When properly installed by a certified installer, this spray insulation will last for decades without significant loss of performance. A properly insulated home can save a homeowner a significant amount on energy bills compared to an uninsulated home, so the initial investment will pay for itself quickly.

TCS Insulation & Coatings: The Benefits of Closed-Cell Spray Foam Insulation

There are several types of spray insulation to choose from, including open and closed-cell. Meritage Homes utilizes open-cell spray foam, which bonds to the frame of a home and is less likely to shrink over time. Open-cell spray foam also contains no HCFCs, HFCs, or PFFCs and uses low GWP blowing agents. Closed-cell spray foam is more rigid and a bit more expensive, but it has a higher R-value per inch, provides superior duct sealing and helps control condensation.

Professionals use specialized equipment to achieve consistent coverage and proper expansion when applying the spray foam. This allows them to achieve precise R-values, application rates and density. Some spray foam products may shrink and pull away from structural framing or exterior walls/roofs when improperly applied. Extensive shrinkage can compromise the integrity of the finished insulation and lead to moisture problems, especially in cold climates.
